For a developmental edit or manuscript evaluation, I will request the full manuscript to be reviewed. This will allow me to prepare an accurate project quote. I will then schedule a pre-edit phone conference to ensure we are a good fit and to give me a good understanding of your vision for the project. Next, I will prepare the contract and the invoice for the first payment, which is 50% of the project (unless otherwise negotiated). Once the contract is signed and the first payment has been received, I’ll begin editing your manuscript. Upon completion of the edit, I’ll send (1) the final edited document, (2) the editorial or manuscript evaluation letter, and (3) the invoice for final payment. We will also schedule a post-edit phone conference to talk through the edit and brainstorm how we can take your book to the next level!
For a copyedit, I will request the full document to be reviewed as well as your style guide. This will allow me to prepare an accurate project quote. I will then schedule a pre-edit phone conference to ensure we are a good fit and to give me a good understanding of your vision for the project. If you request a sample edit, I will edit a portion of your project (no more than 1,000 words) and return that to you with the project proposal. Next, I will prepare the contract and the invoice for the first payment, which is 50% of the project (unless otherwise negotiated). Once the contract is signed and the first payment has been received, I’ll begin editing your work. Upon completion of the edit, I’ll send (1) the final edited document, (2) the complete style guide (for manuscripts), and (3) the invoice for final payment.
For a proofread, I will request the document as well as your style guide and format preference. This will give me a better understanding of your project. If you request a sample proofread, then I will proofread a portion of your project (no more than 1,000 words) and return that to you with the project proposal. If you are agreeable, I will send you the contract and invoice for the first payment, which is 50% of the project (unless otherwise negotiated). Once the contract is signed and the first payment has been received, I’ll begin proofreading your project. Upon completion of the project, I will send (1) the final proofread document and (2) the invoice for final payment.
For a beta read, I will confirm your book is on my list of specialties. Once confirmed, I will request your manuscript and perform the beta read. Upon completion, I will send you (1) the beta analysis and (2) the invoice for payment.
Is Professional Editing Necessary with AI?
AI can only catch so much in a piece of writing without understanding the context, tone, and voice. While AI can be helpful with misspellings and obvious grammatical mistakes, often contextual errors, homophones, homonyms, and all the tricky punctuation rules that require extra research will still be left in your published document without a qualified editor. A sentence can be grammatically correct while still being contextually inaccurate. While AI can be a great tool to help improve writing as a whole, the feedback of a human editor for more nuanced errors and personalized feedback is still necessary. I will work to ensure that your piece is error-free in plot and character development, context, grammar, tone, and voice. I will also partner with you to ensure your work includes all of the craft components that pull your readers in and keep them turning the page! Could I Just Edit My Own Project?
Self-editing is a valuable step and can save you considerably in terms of editorial expenses. When you identify and correct errors, you reduce the number of project hours required by a professional editor. This of course means more money in your pocket!
However, I never encourage self-editing as your only means of editing if your goal is to publish a professional document. Self-editing alone will likely result in missed errors. You are so familiar with the work that your mind will automatically skip over errors such as double words, missed words, homonyms, etc. A professional editor will be able to catch those errors, and others, to avoid the embarrassment of publishing a work that could lead to a loss of credibility. In fact, even editors use editors before publishing their work.
What Type of Work Do You Have Experience With?
I have experience with essays, websites, business documents, marketing materials, resumes, and manuscripts. I am also currently a volunteer for Distributed Proofreaders, working to make old works available in digital format. To view an example of a document edited with track changes, please see below.
